On the morning of August 11th, 2024, the foothills of Sikharchandi transformed into a vibrant celebration of Odisha’s rich handloom heritage. Team SOWW along with its sponsor for the event and with the invaluable support of Team IRONMONK, successfully conducted the 2nd edition of the Odisha Handloom Walkathon. With near about 500 participants, mostly women, walking 3 kilometers to promote local handloom, the event was a fitting tribute to National Handloom Day. This year’s event was not just a walkathon; it was a grand cultural showcase that celebrated the spirit of Odisha through art, dance, and community.

A Walkathon with a Cause

The walkathon was the centerpiece of the event, designed to raise awareness about the significance of handloom in Odisha. Participants, dressed in traditional handloom sarees, kurtas, and dupattas, embodied the essence of the state’s rich textile tradition. The sight of so many individuals walking together in support of local artisans was both inspiring and heartwarming. The 3KM walk through the scenic landscape of Sikharchandi served as a reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting this age-old craft in an increasingly modern world.

In addition to the walkathon, the event also featured a cultural showcase that highlighted the exceptional talent of local artists. The stage came alive with mesmerizing performances of Odissi dance, where both women and children captivated the audience with their grace and artistry. The traditional dance, deeply rooted in Odisha’s cultural history, was a perfect complement to the event’s theme of celebrating local heritage.

The presence of special guest star Bhoomika Dash added a touch of glamour and excitement to the event. Her participation, along with other dignitaries, elevated the event’s profile, drawing attention to the importance of supporting local artisans and promoting handloom. Bhoomika Dash’s engagement with the participants and her appreciation for the handloom craft resonated with the audience, making her presence a highlight of the day.

A Community United in Celebration

The Odisha Handloom Walkathon was not just about promoting handloom; it was about bringing the community together in celebration of their shared cultural heritage. The event was a visual and cultural feast, where tradition met modernity, and the community came together to support a common cause. The enthusiasm and participation of the local community, especially women, underscored the growing appreciation for Odisha’s handloom industry.

As the event came to a close, the sense of accomplishment was evident on the faces of all those involved. The walkathon, the cultural performances, and the presence of distinguished guests all contributed to making the 2nd edition of the Odisha Handloom Walkathon a memorable and impactful event.

Looking Forward: Continuing the Legacy

The success of this year’s event has set a strong foundation for future initiatives aimed at promoting Odisha’s handloom industry.
